On the Basis of Sex

My wife and I saw the movie “On the Basis of Sex” today. The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s landmark gender discrimination case in 1972. As I sat next to my wife, I began to cry. She has been such a strong person who loves Christ and has gone through so much in her life. Living in the Deep South in the 1950’s, growing up in the inner city of Chicago in the Englewood neighborhood in the mid 1960’s and early 70’s.  Being told she would be nothing more than a “hair dresser” by her 5th grade teacher and then failing her. Struggling for acceptance not only in a white dominated society but a male dominated society. I could not help but cry because it is women like my wife, my mother who left an abusive relationship to protect her two boys, my grandmother who raised seven children during the depression and then turned around and helped my mother raise me and my brother and many others who have made my life complete. I thank God for the great women in my life. It truely is true what the writer of Proverbs said thousands of years ago about the Proverbs 31 women” They shall rise up and call her blessed.” Unfortunately, even today in 2019 we continue to see women discriminated against and even worst exploted not just by men in the world, but if the “church too” movement is accurate and unfortunately it is, by men in the church. As a man, let us not tolerate this foolishness anymore. Let us step up to the plate in Jesus name and declare boldly that we are not going to stay silent anymore as women around us are made to feel inferior by men. May we as men be the new Ruth Bader Ginsberg and stand up, beside and for our sisters. Shalom!
